Jonathan and Mali Movin’ On to the Grammys

Congratulations to Jonathan McReynolds and Mali Music for their Grammy nominated  record Movin’ On. It was nominated in the category of Best Gospel Performance Song.

The rhythmically upbeat Movin' On is an
energizing blend of get up and feel good gospel  with r&b and old school soul flourishes. The lyrics meld traditional
spiritual phrases like from “faith to favor” with hopeful ones like I know my rearview(ooh, ooh) Can't compare to what God will do with my life and “forgetting what’s behind me, focusing on what’s inside me” as he places his hand over his heart in a light hearted manner in the original Movin’ On  video. When I hear the song, I think of moving ahead, “closing chapters and turning pages”... as an often bittersweet feeling, leaving familiar and steady places for new and unknown territory. The move takes courage.

The song is accentuated at the end with Mali's slick yet God centered rap lyrics alternating with Jon’s smooth and laid back vibrato on this cut.  It’s innovative, spiritual, fun and inspirational.

Congratulations to all the other nominees in this category as well.

, Rodney Jerkins, Lecrae Moore & Jazz Nixon, songwriters
Wishing John and  Mali all the best.  Get your blessings guys. In this case, your Grammys. Praying for you. Amen.

By the way the Grammys will be televised on Sunday, January 31, 2021 on the CBS network. Check your local listings for exact times.

Georgia Needs a Change:Lifting Up Raphael Warnock

Pastor Warnock and Dr.Steed Davidson January 2006-Church Sanctuary

...no oppressor shall again overrun them, for now I have seen with my own eyes. Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your King comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he... Zechariah 9:9

Just want to top an excerpt from an old article and fond memory of  a visit made by a group of Union seminary students that included me and forty Columbia University School of Social Work students to Raphael Warnock’s church as part of our trip to the hurricane ravaged Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina. The article can also be found in the book, Katrina: Listening with Our Hearts
With Pastor Warnock now running for a critical seat in the Georgia Senate I just wanted to lift him up. The visit to his church, Second Ebenezer, pulpit of the late great civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King,  was one of the highlights of our journey. His hospitality was stellar and his sermon was just what was needed, a rhema word to carry on and complete our mission to Ocean Springs, Biloxi and finally New Orleans.

For Doe Jones:Make Way for a Beautiful Voice and God Loving Spirit

Doe Jones released her Ep several weeks ago 10/29/2020 at a Listening Party hosted by Jonathan McReynolds featuring the upbeat and cheerful “ Brighter”. There was something about Brighter that I really resonated with perhaps the joyful melody, Doe’s  gift for hitting just the right note at the right time and its vibrato far exceeding your tonal expectations.

You might recall if you’ve ever listened to her Grammy nominated break out performance on Jonathan Mc Reynold’s Cycles just how resonant and melodious her vocals are. Girl can blow as in really s-a-a-a-n-g. She’s been singing at church services and with her family music group the Grammy nominated Jones’ for years. But I still could not help but wonder why I hadn’t seen any commercial albums on the mainstream gospel charts after hearing those powerhouse vocals for the first time on Cycles. Getting back to her EP, I enjoyed all of the cuts on it. Good Now, Take Me Back,  but my favorite songs are “Hey You”  her duet with McReynolds and “I Try” a song about an up and coming star’s struggle to conform to the recording industry’s rather imposing beauty and style standards that equate success as sometimes prioritizing style over substance—running neck in neck. You know the frou frou, lashes and big hair that has little to do with musical talent, but somehow seems to trump it from time to time in combination with the x-factor.

I highly recommend you add this EP to your digital or CD record collection for easy access when you need to hear some refreshing and spiritually uplifting songs. It is also a collection you’d be happy to share with your friends as a gift over the holidays as I indicated in an earlier post announcing her listening party here.

Please Join Us in Prayer for Those Challenged With Covid-19

Special Covid-19 prayer podcast link can be found here.

Over 80 musicians, athletes and public figures have been diagnosed with Covid-19. Some have recovered through the grace of god. We continue to keep them and their families lifted in prayer. Some of those listed are announced in the video above. They include John Mayer, Fred Hammond, Tiffany Haddish and Babyface.

You can find an extensive list of additional people who have been diagnosed or challenged with Covid-19 at Magic radio station’s website. They did a great job and provided a very thorough list.
This painting by Cynthia Wilson and related merchandise will be on sale in our shop. 30 percent of the proceeds  will be donated to Covid Help and Relief efforts.

Top this!

Listen to the audio podcast at this link.

Please pray for everyone on the above list and join us in prayer either on Zoom, during the live Facebook broadcast, podcast, or dedicated phone line. Remember also that you can take the time out to “pray in place” and/or virtually with your prayer partners when the spirit so moves you if you are in a safe place.

This list will be updated regularly. We hope and pray there will soon be no need to update it. I pray also that the information received is truthful and accurate. Some of the issues around inaccuracy I am sure have to do with security, safety and privacy concerns and is totally understandable.

Nonetheless it is  unfortunate that people who sincerely love these entertainers sometimes have no idea what is really going on with them or what stage of an illness they are at. I know that certain information can’t be shared. But some information that is being withheld can be safely shared and should be. The public has a right to know in most cases at least whether the person is still receiving treatment, whether they remain hospitalized or whether they have passed on. In that latter case, that information would provide a needed cue for them to send expressions of sympathy to their next of kin. In addition, it would also allow them to begin the process of properly grieving the loss themselves so they can initiate the needed process of closure.

If you don’t want to give a street address or location of the hospital or nursing facility where they are receiving treatment share a special P.O. Box or other drop-off location where fans can send get well cards, gifts and other well wishes. If the artist has a cash app or other mode of obtaining donations please reveal it so folks can send in their donations.

If you/they would like an in person visit or have a  special prayer  request, please have your caregiver or family member call the following toll free number message line. Leave a number and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Toll free number-877-776-7442.

You may leave a voicemail anytime of day or night to request emergency prayer and virtual prayer visits.

Obama’s Promised Land: Let the Healing Begin

Scripture for Today

“No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit , for each tree is known by its own fruit.”Romans 6:43

It is really good to see President Obama back on the scene again.  It has been comforting to listen to his level-headed responses in interviews about his latest book, A Promised Land. His long awaited weigh in on the current administration’s policies and reactions to crises these past four years is a needed salve for the country, as we heal from the emotional distress caused by uncertainties of a global pandemic and social ills compounded by the Trump administration. The timing couldn’t be better now that the Democrats have won back the White House with another historic ticket-a black woman serving as Vice President and his own Vice President elected now as President. The signs couldn’t be more auspicious for getting the country back on track.

Vacation Time...From the Archives...”Sing a Simple Song” and “Christ Representers” Good Songs Any Year

I am continuing to sort, pack and organize stuff, memories, books,

papers that were long lost but recently recovered. I came across a blog article I wrote on Sly Stone ten years ago. I was following up on him as part of a series I was doing on that particular blog called “Whatever Happened to?”It was a feature column keeping periodic tabs on and seeking to uncover the lifestyles and whereabouts of artists the public has not seen or heard from in a while. To shine a light on what they are currently doing, so to speak. Kind of like BET’s Unsung except with more emphasis on those who have been enormously popular and tremendously sung , but are not being heard from in pop news culture these days.

I had come across an article I read about Sly in a newspaper that wrote that he was living in a very small trailer home. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the photo. I was concerned so I posted a blog article. I provided a link to the article from the blog but I would have to Google to find it again. Hopefully,it’s still searchable, as that was a decade ago. Then, there was another article that reported that he was ill and was in a nursing home. See attached below. know I am late in my vacation plans and I regret I have not been able to take full advantage of the very kind offers for respite. All I can say now is please keep the light on.

In addition, there are folks I want to check on in light of this coronavirus spread across the country. But we serve an on time God who knows my situation. So I will remain hopeful for the future and remain prayerful that everything is proceeding in divine order. I just need to have things organized and properly stored before I go.

While so doing, music is keeping me energized, motivated and spiritually uplifted. There’s a lot to go through. My soundtrack this morning and into mid-afternoon has been “Life Music:Stage Two”. I enjoy Jonathan’s latest release “People” and most tracks on the album like Best Thingv, Cathedral, Situation which I play a lot. But “Life Music:Stage Two” is my favorite. “Christ Representers” has become my regular anthem. I know it’s a five year old release circa 2015. But It really is a beautiful song, lyrics and melody included and he sings it with such verve and sincerity. Its one of those ‘getting up early in the morning’ songs that gets you inspired and pumped up to worship, fellowship with others and let your light shine. He sings “I’ve been anointed to be the light and glorify my God...that, the piano prelude...and the chorus proclaiming “We are Christ Representers. We let our light shines so bright we make ‘em say wooah...” does it every time. His singing leaves no doubt in my mind that he is anointed.(okay podcast) Got that.

The Church is a Spiritual Emergency Room

The church is a spiritual emergency room, a refuge from the world as those that are in the world but not of the world. It is a sanctuary a place where God’s children are welcomed, filled and fortified with the Holy Ghost, energized and healed by God’s miracle working, living, spoken and written word. Not dissected and dismantled by a ferocious digital beast devoid of love, compassion and moral values.

Church is a sacred hallowed place that is not formed fundamentally by brick and mortar but whose foundation is laid by the love of Christ which spreads from breast to breast, heart to heart. As Peter proclaimed “Upon this rock, I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

For god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whosoever believed in him would have everlasting life. God’s only begotten son was wounded for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace is upon him and by his stripes we are healed.

Lifting up praise to God,giving thanks to God, worshipping God today and everyday.

The Nail Biting and Bated Breathing Continues as Election Results Continue to Be Counted

Biden keeps climbing the ladder to Presidential glory as Trump fights tooth and nail to hold on to the Oval. Trump has created flash fires of overly aggressive supporters clamoring any falsehood to establish an air of doubt and derision around the Democratic election process. That is very unsportsmanlike and unstatesmanlike. This is a very close election and zealous support from a candidate’s  base is expected. However, Trump has taken his zeal to win a bit further out of the bounds of peace, harmony and conciliation  and more into intentional development of factional discord than usual for a political candidate, especially a President. Large disorderly groups arrived at voting locations riled up and making frivolous demands. Meanwhile a candidate that can bring this country together-Joe Biden with a historic running mate Kamala Harris-is just inches away from the presidency. In contrast to Trump, Biden has not challenged any of the election results, even the razor thin results in states that Trump won. Nor has he made efforts to organize groups of supporters to assail rightfully conducted polling at election precincts in locations he did not fare to well in or to automatically disregard election results by defying them if he loses.

Let’s all continue to hold on, pray and hope the best man and woman win and that poetic justice will be meted out in large doses.

Happy Election Day-Praise and Thank the Lord!

Good Morning and Happy Election Day! Go to the polls early if you can. I took my mom later in the afternoon and there was a line. But the voting precinct staff was very accommodating and made sure she got all of her ballot information so she could vote. She is 86 years old. So waiting in a long line was not on her agenda even though we ended up waiting in the car so she could be comfortable.

I am so happy that I voted two weeks ago. Early voting opportunities made it possible for a good number of people to vote and look forward to it.

By God’s Grace and Spirit

When people start tussling with me over spiritual vision and want to take possession of what has been already God-given, I just release and take the high road. You see, no one can take from you what has been ordained and anointed by God. They can act out their misconceptions of ultimate power being in their hands, but that is really a fallacy.  It took me some years to finally come to terms with that. But I truly have. I can say that I have really learned my lesson.

Ironically, this entire Coronavirus pandemic has taught a lot of us just how little ultimate control we have over news and current affairs and the consequences they have on everyday living and survival.

I may know how to fight legal battles with the help of legal experts and heavy weights. But their power and skill is no match for God’s infinite wisdom and grace. So, I turn things over to God to fight my battles in matters in which I know I have absolutely no power or control. And would only be “fronting” if I presented that all power was in my hands. Then, there are such things as successors and heirs. People of God know when to yield to their anointing, their gifts of the spirit that are evident and sincere and not foisted up on their own purchase power and secular ambitions. Spiritual leaders know when someone is anointed with the Holy Spirit as well, and they make room for them. Can I get a witness?

By the way, the church is a spiritual emergency room, a refuge from the world as those that are in the world but not of the world. It is a sanctuary a place where God’s children are welcomed, filled and fortified with the Holy Ghost, energized and healed by God’s miracle working, living, spoken and written word. Church is a sacred hallowed place that is not formed fundamentally by brick and mortar but whose foundation is laid by the love of Christ which spreads from breast to breast, heart to heart. As Peter proclaimed “Upon this rock, I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Hallelujah and Amen.

All award-winner's  performances were compelling and demonstrated their chops for commanding and, yes, anointed singing and delivery.

By the way, the Dove Awards put on a beautifully videographed show tonight. The photographic capture, lighting and art direction presented unity of spirit among the worshipper-performers in an intimate manner. The singing in circles was aesthetically pleasing and easy on the eyes. The performances were very powerful and the interview shorts were thoughtful, informative and inspiring. Jonathan McReynolds Hosts Listening Party for Doe Jones!

Check his websites and Instagram page. The updates are ongoing. The EP is full of good songs and Doe has an incredible voice. Her vocal range is  extraordinary. You will be wondering like I did when I first heard her singing on Cycles why you haven’t heard any commercial releases from her until now. Good examples of  her range are “Reach”and “Cycles”. While those two songs are not on her EP take a listen to them while checking out the songs that are, like “Brighter”, “Take Me Back” , “I Try”, “Hey You” and “Good Now”. Definitely worth adding to your contemporary gospel music collection for yourself, family and friends.

Dems Protest Barrett SCOTUS Nomination with Boycott Effort

Democrats protest Senate Judiciary Committee vote to confirm Judge Amy Barrett to the Supreme Court by expressing their discontent in an organized boycott. In what has by all accounts been a lightening speed effort by Republicans to swiftly ramrod Judge Barrett’s Supreme Court nomination through the Senate where the voting deck is stacked in their favor. They have wasted no time in taking maximum advantage of the opportunity. Little time out or political reprieve was allowed for public grieving over the loss of Supreme Court Justice and cultural icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A Supreme Court replacement was announced by Trump  just a few days after RBG’s death and the nomination process begun almost immediately thereafter. It has just been a month since her passing and less than 10 days before the Presidential election. Today Democrats plan a show of force in demonstrating their disapproval of the Republican power grab in an effort to rouse public opinion that could sway the presidential vote and slow down the pace of the nomination process. Though it seems unlikely that will occur considering the momentum they have gained so far in relation to the nearness of the November election. Pray for a miracle. If you have joyful visions of an Obama court in the future.

Movin’ On in God’s Name

Movin’ On is the #1 song by gospel recording artist Jonathan McReynolds joined by Mali Music and it’s message is conveyed in a combination of upbeat and lighthearted music with old school r&b rhythm mixed in. The song gets you feeling and thinking positively about moving on from any situation in life that you may feel god does not want you to remain in. “I’m closing chapters. I’m turning pages, glory to glory from faith to favor. As you intently listen to the lyrics, Jonathan sings “I know my rear view can’t compare to what God will do with my life. I’m movin’ on”.  It’s about progress, growth, moving forward and celebrating the future. It brought to mind an archived blog post I wrote on forgiveness. Forgiving others is also about moving on, moving forward and not getting stuck in negative energy that harms you more in the long run.  Entitled, “On Forgiveness: the Heart of the Matter featuring India Arie’s cover of the Heart of the Matter a song on forgiveness by Eagles’ band member Don Henley. India also has recorded a duet with Jonathan a few years back. Their song is entitled Whole.

Whole.

Maintaining Integrity and Loving Ourselves and Others Through the Storms and Ugly Truths

Topping this podcast episode originally posted on October 8 and recorded on October 6, 2020.

Maintaining Integrity and Loving Ourselves and Others Through the Storms and Ugly Truths

 Scripture reference is Psalm 27:1.

Rev. Cynthia Wilson selects an essay/article from her archives dated 10.28.15 referencing an episode from BET’s “Being Mary Jane” series and discusses suicide, physical and figurative, how we can sometimes get the wrong information because of a miscommunication I.e., we may not be forthcoming with the real deal or truth about what may really be going on in our lives in order to maintain a false bravado or certain socially acceptable image. Sometimes this will lead to unfortunate outcomes. But sometimes it’s just best to maintain. The inference is if we remain prayerful, faithful to God’s word  and trust in God’s guidance we will ultimately triumph if we maintain and put our trust entirely in god to see us through the storms.

Scripture for today:

Psalm 27:1

The Lord is My Light and my salvation whom Shall I Fear?

Easy Yoke, Light Burden, Trust and Belief

Don't let the chaos, confusion and uncertainty consume and bring you down. It is frequently during trying times that the wheat is separated from the chaff, fallow is distinguished from fertile ground, light outshines the darkness, a flash of clarity is received and truth is revealed. Listen out for the still voice of the infinite creator which guides and raises you above the apparent emotional quicksand and seeming uncrossable rivers. Take action undergirded by prayer, faith, trust and belief.

Gods yoke is easy. His burden is light. Trust and believe you can reach your goal.

__________________________
Question: "What does it mean when Jesus says 'my yoke is easy and my burden is light' (Matthew 11:30)?"

Answer: The phrase “my yoke is easy and my burden is light” is part of a larger passage (Matthew 11:28-30), in which Jesus tells all who are weary and burdened to come to Him for rest. He isn’t speaking here of physical burdens. Rather, it was the heavy burden of the system of works that the Pharisees laid on the backs of the people that Jesus was offering to relieve. Later on in Matthew’s gospel, Jesus will rebuke the Pharisees for laying heavy burdens on the shoulders of the people (Matthew 23:4).

The “yoke of the Pharisees” is the burdensome yoke of self-righteousness and legalistic law-keeping. It has been said by biblical scholars that the Pharisees had added over 600 regulations regarding what qualified as ‘working’ on the Sabbath. That is a heavy burden! Recall the story of the lawyer who asked Jesus what was the greatest commandment of the Law (Matthew 22:36). You can almost read between the lines of the man’s question – “What law, of all the laws we have, do I absolutely have to keep?”

Jesus was saying that any kind of law-keeping is burdensome and amounts to a “heavy yoke” of oppression because no amount of law-keeping can bridge the gap between our sinfulness and God’s holiness. God says through the mouth of the prophet Isaiah that all of our righteous deeds are like a “polluted garment,” and Paul reiterated to the Romans that “no one will be declared righteous."

What makes Jesus’ yoke easy and his burden light is that in Jesus’ own active obedience (i.e., his perfect fulfillment of the Law of God), He carried the burden that we were meant to carry. His perfect obedience is applied (imputed) to us through faith, just as His righteousness was exchanged for our sin at the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21). Our obedience to Jesus then becomes our “spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1). Furthermore, we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit who works in our lives to mold us into the image of Christ, thereby making the yoke of Jesus easy and His burden light. The life lived by faith is a much lighter yoke and a much easier burden to carry than the heavy and burdensome yoke of self-righteousness under which we continually strive to make ourselves acceptable to God through works.

Time to Get Out the Vote !

Join leaders of our churches as they discuss the Theology of Voting Sunday evening.Get your souls to the polls early, if you can to start making that needed difference. Vote as if your life depended on it. Because it really does. For the first time in our nation’s history their is a black woman on the Presidential ballot. That is something to be excited about!

Dr. Gina Stewart’s Woman’s Day Sermon at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church

Dr. Gina Stewart preached a mighty word today as Hartford’s Women’s Day speaker. It was tremendously inspiring. I honestly felt the sermon had been tailor made for me. But, that is how the spirit moves and why preaching is such a powerful form of transformative healing through God’s word. It touches who it is supposed to. God’s omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence is made manifest through anointed human vessels such as Dr. Stewart, delivering his mighty word.

She shared the story of two women in the Bible Shiphrah and Puah who were obscure but who did a great thing, a great work by not being obedient  to the evil king and refusing to carry out orders to murder all male babies. In fact, they were very clever about it. The King even approached them personally and asked why they did not do as he ordered. They responded that the Hebrew women give birth before the midwife can even arrive. But they feared God rather than the political rulers of the day and are eventually rewarded for their actions.

The male child in the midwives’ care was Moses and we all know how important he became.  He shook up the world and laid a solid foundation for eons and generations to come, a great man of god, charged with leading his people out of the bondage of slavery and a self-imposed wilderness of 40 years. No Christian or Hebrew story  is complete without the inclusion of Moses. Here we are now thousands of years into the future with a sermon, a conversation with Moses as crucial subject.

What I liked most about Dr. Stewart’s sermon was how she blended people, freedom fighters and social activists of today with the midwives story and status equating them as midwives as well. She built up the momentum of their importance in a crescendo of vocal recognition  at the end of her sermon that by its very nature increased the value and expanded the importance of midwifery while leveling up the playing field so to speak, of obscured heroes in history and our everyday lives. She mentioned a stream of civil rights icons like Dr. King, Medgar Evers, Rosa Parks, Suffragettes, everyday people who do their part and others one by one, building up the value of doing good and being good, helping and saving others like the midwives saved and protected Moses.

Everybody that helps others, that protects others in harm’s way  or who speaks out or acts out for justice is a midwife. Those who are overlooked but who are important to God’s plan in contrast to those on the other hand who beat their chests out loud, who may be “talking loud, but saying nothing” (my interjection/not Dr. Stewart’s words)and doing only harm and seeking rewards and self-aggrandizement for their evil, like the King seeking mass execution of male children out of maniacal selfish motives. He was threatened that they might rise up against him one day.

I resonated with the subjects she chose, two women that have as far as I can remember never been mentioned in a sermon let alone been the subject of one. Her sermon demonstrated how the Bible is rich with stories and with hard work and impeccable research you can cast sacred Biblical stories and the characters contained in them in a new light and build upon their spiritual value as she did with Shiphrah and Puah.

Wait Until After the Election to Confirm RBG’s Supreme Court Replacement

No Replacement Yet for RBG, Please.  Republicans are attempting now to rapidly push through their conservative agenda to appoint a conservative judge to the Supreme Court to replace recently deceased Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg . Her body is still lying in state. Instead of allowing and condoning the Republicans to behave in this manner, they need to be stayed, stalled and called out. Give the public time to breathe and grieve.

There is no urgency to put this movement in motion prior to the election. The election is less than 60 days away. Give the woman some respect. Not only that, but honor our democratic system and declare a moratorium on any action to appoint a replacement for RBG  until after the election.  They really are coming off rather ghoulishly, demonstrating no decency or respect for such a great woman widely admired by the American public, especially many women.

On the other hand, the Republican leaders at the President’s behest may be doing the Democrats a favor by belittling themselves in pushing so swiftly for a confirmation. Polls have been conducted which indicate that a majority percentage of men and women alike favor the nomination and confirmation process be conducted after the presidential election has been held in November.

This years’s Emmys telecast was a real class act.  Jimmy Kimmel did a great job as host. I thought they went the extra creative mile using cars to get the award trophies out to the awardees fast and with lot’s of buzz. The focus on voting and getting out the vote was a lot of fun to watch and kept momentum up throughout the broadcast.

It was notable the number of blacks winning Emmys this year in categories across the board. Regina King and her show “The Watchmen” was a big winner, picking up awards for Outstanding  limited series and acting trophies for her and Yahya Abdul-Mateen III.  Tyler Perry had a big night as he was honored with an introduction by friend and fellow billionaire media icon Oprah as a recipient of the Governor’s award which recognizes extraordinary or cumulative accomplishments in television. You could almost hear a pin drop(figuratively speaking) when he gave an engaging and sensitive speech about his grandmother, the black experience in America and how thrilled she would have been to see him receive his Emmy. Zendaya a young black woman won for her role in “Euphoria” and became the youngest in Emmy history to win in the category of best leading actress in a drama. Other winners included Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black fame for her supporting actress role in Mrs. America. Maya Rudolph and  Eddie Murphy won Emmys for Outstanding Guest Actor and Actress on a comedy show— Saturday Night Live. Also, Ru Paul’s series won Emmys in two reality categories.

Schitts Creek which addresses humorously LGBT life won a record nine(9) Emmys in the comedy genre. HBO drama series about a business tycoon and his relationship with family, Succession garnered several awards including Best actor and Best drama. For a complete list of nominees and winners please go to any of your television entertainment magazines or blogs. I tried to provide a link. The Season of Giving More Than Expected...

The song goes "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”

As we put up our decorations, gather together with family and friends while reveling in the joy and merriment of this holiday season, imagining new ways to bring happiness to children and loved ones, it is also a time to take stock of just what religious values mean. What can be done to heighten the true meaning of Christianity and Christmas in our families, communities and wider world, if Christianity is your religion of choice?  This is especially so in light of the intensity of the Covid-19 "roller coaster" ride we've all been on along with confrontations with police, racism and anxiety many may be feeling about the current political controversies, creating a divide in our two party system. Though there are independent parties bobbing their heads and throwing their hats into the political arena from time to time as well.

Do you as an individual ever have feelings of giving more of your time, your treasures and yourself than you had ever imagined? God loves a cheerful giver. But you do have to guard your treasures I.e., Even during the upcoming season of expected generosity that is rapidly approaching I.e., Thanksgiving next month and Christmas only 30 days from that. So, it’s prudent and timely to prepare and plan ahead.
If you and those you plan on gifting love music, I have compiled a wonderful Christmas Jazz playlist for the holiday season.

For some of us Christmas came earlier this year and "over-giving" like oversharing can take its toll. But what do you do you the cheerful and Christ-minded giver encounter "takers", people who have little or no regard for your property. They think you are being petty because you want to make sure that your property is recognized as your property with proper credit given to you if you choose or have chosen to give it away. Not some fly by night gold digger who is only out to accumulate and maraude. What's wrong with you wanting recognition for your assets even the one's they take that you may have wanted to get credit for generously donating to them instead? There is something good about the joy that fills your heart when you give. I know I feel happy when I make a gift to someone who truly appreciates it.There's a very healing energy exchange. To be deprived of that kind of exchange is damaging to the giver who expected to give but was deprived because of an unauthorized interloper. It is a big loss.

So plan ahead for your next season and take every opportunity to give extravagantly from the heart what you want and intend to give. But guard against being co-opted or sly balled into giving what you had no intention of giving. Take every precaution that your generosity, hard works and kindness won’t be counted as weaknesses. Don’t continue to overextend yourself.

Let’s keep that situation lifted in prayer as well.🙏🏾

Doing a Good Job

This song was originally broadcast back in April during the height of the coronavirus public health  crisis. Frontline workers were in need of sincere and heartfelt expressions of gratitude. Alicia Keys being the megawatt musician and humanitarian she is delivered powerfully with Doing a Good Job. Alicia pays a touching tribute to all the health care workers who have been working fearlessly and tirelessly attending to the overflow of Corona virus patients admitted to the hospitals worldwide. The lyrics and melody soar as much as the cause.

I just wanted to lift this song up again during this time frontline workers and first responders are being challenged in so many other ways as they rescue and provide care to those in need.

Beautiful song. Amazing! Thank you, Alicia Keys!

ABC to air special “Tribute Fit for a King” Tonite  and also broadcast  the movie “Black Panther” without commercial interruptions. Check your local stations and time zones for exact times.

________________

Sending prayers 🙏🏾 of comfort and extending condolences to Chadwick Boseman’s family and friends, especially his beloved wife. There is a balm in Gilead and while weeping may endure through the night, we know that joy will be restored in God’s own time. As scripture says,  “weeping may endure through the night, but joy comes in the morning(Psalm 30:5). We will all understand it better by and by.

I was surprised to learn of his passing because there had been no mention of his battle with colon cancer in the media. There was a touching video of an interview he did on Sirius radio in which he teared up when he learned that two young fans battling cancer had passed away before they saw the long awaited Black Panther movie. Little did we know at the time that he himself was secretly battling colon cancer. I wish I could have prayed for him and that he and his family could have reached out for prayer from a band of fans and prayer warriors. But I am definitely praying for the family now, as are many others, including his alumni association at Howard where he gave a powerful speech to graduating seniors. See video.

Chadwick made us proud. Many enjoyed the skillful and laid back manner in which he portrayed his film characters and how he and others made history with the release of  historic mega-blockbuster movie Black Panther. I saw everyone of his movies. Though I completely marveled at Black Panther, my favorites were “Get On Up” and “21 Bridges”. I was thoroughly moved by the skillful manner in which he portrayed Godfather of Soul, James Brown and his magnetic portrayal of a brilliant detective in 21 Bridges.

Chadwick Boseman you were well thought of and loved. Not just for roles you portrayed on celluloid, but for how you connected with and genuinely cared for others. Your life was short, but meaningfully lived. You will be greatly missed.

“Hopeful History Made, Blunting Coronavirus’ Toll

The impact of the Coronavirus pandemic has been blunted notably by the historic nomination of Kamala Harris, the first black woman to ever make it within threshold reach of the Vice Presidential office. For many blacks, it is an historic and hopeful time, though many are worn out and drained from what has been an unceasing  Covid-19 roller coaster ride. The uncertainties that have hatched since its onslaught, and the haphazard way in which the entire matter has been managed still leaves tremendous psychological burdens and trauma on the public. Everyday the community of consciousness takes a beating from media reports of mounting deaths and new contractions of the disease, people being buried in mass gravesites, etc.

The politicians want to point fingers at one another and maneuver the menace of coronavirus into a game changer for either side. The party or person that can come up with a medicinal cure  or who can successfully employ social  stratagems of containment and order to ameliorate the financial impact of joblessness, lost tax revenue from cancellations of major events and mass depression, will be our qualified tested and true heroes. Well, in case you have not figured it out yet, there is a higher and larger dynamic at play here.

In short and to the point, man’s limitation is God’s opportunity. It’s time to bring the faith communities together like never before and call on our creator for guidance and direction in employing resources to our surrounding communities and broader world. Though notable strides have been made to neutralize the virus’ impact in many ways, measures have been taken to curb its spread, healthcare workers are being lifted up and truly appreciated, neighbors are reaching out in kindness to their neighbors more, doctors are racing for a cure. But Coronavirus continues to bob its relentless head up again and again. New Zealand, Brazil, El Salvador and a host of other countries around the world including the US can attest to that. Human kind seems to be somehow mysteriously log jammed and intermittently stuck. However, Congress has done amazingly in a short time getting the first round of economic relief out to citizens.

But, I wonder while many still don’t have steady income or jobs what is taking so long for our leaders to take constructive actions now and pass and sign a bill that will continue unemployment compensation, emergency loans to small needy businesses and substantial relief  to individuals? We need to turn up the volume and shine the spotlight on that. Re-distributing the mammoth loans that went out overpaying wealthy corporations, back to poor families struggling to make ends meet is a good start in infusing hope in the public and restoring faith in our system of government. This action would certainly serve to energize the masses and aid in fortifying the spirit to overcome Covid-19.

I think the Biden Harris ticket can do that and much more with significant input from ordinary citizens like those highlighted during the Democratic Convention’s innovative keynote--a brilliant idea, by the way. Hooray for Kamala!

God is able.

The Stellar Stellars! An Amazing Night of Gospel Music

An amazing show tonight. Catch everything here on You Tube. The lead in shows in Houston as well as the special promotional videos that Kirk Franklin, Jonathan McReynolds and Koryn Hawthorne did as co-hosts had me and I’m sure many more eagerly anticipating this year’s 35th Annual Stellar awards. See Houston interview and performance clip here. You will discover a few things about the co-hosts you may not have known beforehand in the interview by Deborah Duncan of Great Day Houston. Jonathan winner of seven(7) Stellars so far is also an author. His latest book is “Make Room:Finding Where Faith Fits” and his latest record release is People. Jonathan also has a Masters degree in Biblical Studies and is an official member of membership organizations. For geniuses, Mensa. Koryn Hawthorn has a no.1 single “You Still Love Me and, of course, the legendary Kirk Franklin is still soaring as a gospel chart topper and maintaining his masterful musicianship and influence in the field Picking up 5 awards for his latest album release “Love Theory”.  The full list of tonight’s winners and categories can be found here. Stellar awards production is also making a program booklet of the show available for download free of charge.

All performances from the original live show broadcast can be viewed on the BET network.  Moving performances by Jonathan McReynolds, Koryn Hawthorne,Tye Tribett, Zacardi Cortez, Group Fire, Anthony Brown,  James Fortune featuring Deborah Carolina, CeCe Winans who performed a special memorial tribute to  Congressman John Lewis with Bridge Over Troubled Water, Pastor Mike, Tamala Mann and JJ Hairston featuring Kierra Sheard on the award winning “Miracle Worker” ; they all kept the show brimming with inspiration from beginning to end, all the way to the last performance. Tasha Cobb Leonard accepted her award for Song of the Year humbly and with grace. Of course, we know that gospel music is inspiration and drives our church praise teams and Sunday morning worship services every week. The Stellars celebrated gospel music this year with panache and style despite the inability to broadcast live in their usual manner pre-coronavirus.

Jonathan’s Mc Reynold’s “Best Thing”, performance videotaped outdoors was lively and lit with the show lights shining brightly...speaking of which, I have to admit that I have had his 2018 CD “Make Room” on replay in my disc player even though People is his latest release. Both are best. So make room for People as well. But you know, it’s great when an artist can have his earlier release  listened to and enjoyed as much as his earlier record...that is definitely a double portion.

The producers, editors and behind the scenes crew did a great job of pulling the segments together creatively in light of the Coronavirus social distancing protocols that have caused the television industry to re-think and re-design live broadcasts. The show was edited nicely. I enjoyed the way it segued from the hosts intro of each artist into their video performances. Tamala Mann looked magnificent singing her song from that picturesque mountaintop scene and Doe and Travis Greene’s performance was strong and energetic. In fact all performances were moving and spirit filled.

God bless! Stay safe and well out there. Keeping you all in my prayers.

God's Justice,Not ”Just Us”-7.15.13

More names to be added on a slideshow. They couldn't all fit on one art image. I superimposed eleven of them on a drawing. It's sad there were so many that they all could not fit.
________________________
Let justice roll down like mighty waters and righteousness as an everlasting stream-Amos 5:24

Back in the day a term which some might call a slang phrase,a definition for which may be found in the Urban Dictionary ,or one of comedian Richard Pryor's seminal jokes, is Just Us. Instead of Justice, black people called it just-us because of the lopsided results often found in the court and prison system for black people.

As passions continue to ignite, righteous indignation and anger erupt into hues and cries for justice, building a groundswell with which to be reckoned, let us remain prayerful and hopeful as we call on God for direction. We pray that Trayvon Martin and the countless others who have been killed in similar manner and not guilty verdicts returned throughout the years won't have died without vindication and in vain. God will answer.

When God answers, pray to be guided by that answer. An answer which is certain to fill hearts and minds with not only a peace which surpasses all human understanding. But holy boldness that which often, by implication would also include a resolve to take peaceful, persistent and constructive action to correct the societal ills of racial profiling, stand your ground laws, unfettered use of firearms and stalking of black youth by unmonitored and woefully unregulated vigilantes. Those also ginned up on vague and poorly constructed statutes which likely can't withstand constitutional scrutiny nor muster.

And,though painful memories of past injustices perpetrated against black men--primitive and high tech lynchings alike--again surface, fueling combined rage and cynicism, let us remain mindful that God is able "through our weary years...and has led us thus far on our way.." in the words of James Weldon Johnson. But we have to march sometimes, protest and make our voices heard sometimes, speak truth to power,"Lift Every Voice and Sing, til earth and heaven ring"... transform what is regarded by consensus as a bad and imperfect result, by the very nature of our unity, combined action, voices, strength and 'calling out' purpose.

We can have respect for the rule of law, accept the jury's verdict and still have access to the court of public opinion as we remain righteously indignant, respectful of the defendant and his family, empathetic and outraged for the victim and his family. That availability of choice is what makes our nation so great. The wheels of justice don't always move with the speed, direction or exactitude that man or woman would have it. However, that does not mean that the result we all believe to be right and in line with every Christian precept, every social ethic, everything that is good, perfect, pure and just, won't be the ultimate judgment meted out by the infinite creator, as he uses us as instruments and vessels of his will and purpose here on earth.

This manner of viewing things may be regarded by the raw activist as too spiritual, too high road, too lackadaisical, too passive to effectively galvanize the emotions of the people, mold current sentiment into meaningful and constructive action on the issue of Trayvon Martin's senseless and untimely death. However, I believe that God is able to in the words of Old Testament Prophet Amos, "Let justice roll down like waters and righteousness like an everlasting stream... And God can use anyone and anything to fulfill that purpose. So, don't undervalue your position, your feelings and views.

Get intimate with God. Go into your quiet place with him and ask God to use you as a vessel of forward action, peace, understanding and unity.Take time out for just a moment. Meditate, pray and reflect with God,ask what you can do with your life to make your home, your neighborhood, your community, your city, your state, your country and your world a safer less hate filled place.

What if anything, can you do about the rising incidence of gun violence? Stay abreast of developments on the laws in your city and state. Get involved. Donate your time and talent to the Trayvon Martin Foundation or the efforts of other organizations that are engaged in projects to curb racial profiling, gun violence and hate crimes.

"People"

Jonathan Mc Reynold's People is his latest CD release and includes the thought-provoking single by the same name.  The entire album is filled with beautiful gospel songs that are an inspiring blend of his signature traditional and contemporary gospel for which he has a wonderful flair.  View and take a listen to the entire visual album at the You Tube link above.

The song "People" is a pensive reflection on human relationships and the challenges of dealing with people who cause difficulties in your life. You have to pray to God to help you through and hope and still pray you have not become one of those same people. All of his songs are refreshingly thought out reflections about relationship with God and people in today's world. Listen to it on the video link above.
"I Need Your Grace" another lovely song on the album, has a comforting traditional gospel sound. View it below.

The entire CD is definitely a Jonathan McReynolds essential, a blessing to add to your traditional and contemporary gospel collection. He is a gifted and anointed gospel artist. The music will inspire and uplift your spirits.

Corona Virus Prayer Text and Podcast Link

Find my podcast link below. It is the audio version of my blog post.

https://www.spreaker.com/episode/44623857(reposted 5.4.21 due to deletion)

Today is May 4,2021 and I am topping this Coronavirus prayer of March 26, 2020 for those who missed it.

https://www.spreaker.com/episode/34174101(broken link)

Spirit filled prayers and needed action work well together. God will fill in the gaps and make groans and utterances and intercede for us when we don't know what to pray for. God has always guided the community of faith in times of calamity. Anyone can take time out to pray. Wherever you are, whenever the spirit moves you, you can pray for yourself, your family, your community. The prayers of the righteous availeth much.

Cleaning hands with hot soapy water, disinfecting and taking other recommended actions to assure that germs are not spread are usually things that our common sense in the regular course of cleaning and past experiences with cold and flu viruses has led us to do. But the uncertainties of this virus has filled the atmosphere with fear, anxiety and near hysteria because it can be fatal and no known vaccines exist or have been made available to the public.

For the faithful community of believers, calling on God, our maker, creator of the universe, firmament, earth, giver and restorer of life-- should be our first action.

Guided by Holy Spirit, the 91st Psalm came to mind. Inspired and motivated by God's blessed living and written word, the following prayer:

Dear God in this time of sweeping and unsettling global fear from 'modern' pestilence and plague more commonly known as Covid-19, (Corona Virus) we ask that you would first still our hearts and minds in prayer and praise across the world in places and communities stricken by this virus.  Let us not forget how mighty and awesome you are!

Most high God we know that you inhabit our praise, so let us remember to give you all the praise, honor and glory for waking us up this morning, healthy and strong, in our right minds, still fortified by your loving grace and promise to never leave us alone, to provide comfort, to come to our aid when we call upon you for deliverance from the "terror by night and the noisome pestilence by day",in addition to other disease, chaos and turmoil. Unify us across the globe in our humanity and have mercy.

While our religious and spiritual beliefs and practices may differ, remind us that we can still all pray to God for mercy and healing grace. We can call on God for all that is needed to defeat this scourge and restore health to our villages, cities, counties, states and countries as we take necessary measures recommended by doctors and scientists who have knowledge and experience about this virus. We pray that you will work through them and guide them in finding a cure. Help us to love and do right by our neighbors as we seek a cure.

Finally, call upon the most holy and mighty God, of all faith denominations, all that is good and true and powerful to embolden and restore our trust and faith. Deliver and heal all of God’s children whether Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist or other traditional religions from Corona virus while defeating its accompanying chaos and confusion.

Finally as Christian, I call upon the healing power, favor and grace of Jesus to deliver.

Bless us with peace, divine order, calm and a cure.

Amen.

Grammy-Winning Musician Esperanza Spalding Tells Her Story

Grammy-Winning Musician Esperanza Spalding Tells Her Story: Grammy-winning Jazz musician Esperanza Spalding tells PBS television host Christiane Amanpour's Walter Isaacson, in an interview, about the impact she is making on music and the healing power of sound.

I had an opportunity to attend a Masterclass taught by her and another critically acclaimed and Grammy winning jazz musician at Detroit's Carr Center. It was clear that she has an ingenious method of relating to her students, zeroing in on their unique talent, while encouraging them to exceed what they've already been taught and get in touch with their highest musical levels. Her lecture actually energized everyone in the room.
